Colombia Earthquake – Operational Update
Following the earthquake that affected western Colombia on 10 August 2026, CMA CGM is actively monitoring the situation and implementing measures to ensure operational continuity.
The impact on logistics operations remains primarily concentrated on the Pacific Coast, particularly in and around Buenaventura, while operations on Colombia's Atlantic Coast remain fully operational and unaffected.
Current Operational Status in Buenaventura
The situation at the terminal remains challenging and recovery efforts are progressing gradually.
• Terminal operations have partially resumed, with vessel operations being handled under constrained conditions.
• Yard utilization remains critically high, resulting in severe space limitations.
• Staffing shortages continue to affect operational productivity as part of the local workforce remains unavailable.
• Empty container returns are being impacted by restricted terminal access and congestion.
• The Cali–Buenaventura corridor, the primary logistics gateway serving the port, has not yet been fully restored due to ongoing landslides and infrastructure instability. This remains the key factor affecting the normalization of operations.
As a result, delays in cargo evacuation, container returns, and inland transportation to/from Buenaventura are expected.
Contingency Measures
To minimize disruption and maintain supply chain continuity, CMA CGM teams are actively implementing and evaluating contingency solutions in coordination with terminal operators, inland transportation providers and local authorities.
These measures include:
• Continuous monitoring of terminal capacity and vessel operations.
• Daily assessment of berth availability and yard conditions.
• Evaluation of alternative operational solutions and re-routing options including but not limited to Puerto Antioquia.
• Prioritization of critical cargo whenever operationally possible.
• Enhanced coordination with trucking companies and logistics partners to accelerate cargo evacuation as soon as road conditions permit.
• Ongoing review of network and operational adjustments should congestion persist.
Customer Guidance
Customers with cargo destined for or moving through Buenaventura are encouraged to:
• Anticipate potential delays in cargo delivery and equipment turnaround.
• Maintain close communication with their local CMA CGM representative regarding shipment-specific impacts.
• Review available contingency solutions with CMA CGM teams where time-sensitive or critical cargo is concerned.
CMA CGM remains fully mobilized and committed to supporting you while maintaining the highest possible level of service throughout this situation and strict adherence to safety protocols.
Further updates will be communicated as operational conditions evolve.
